Reflux Disease – My Motivation

Reflux disease has been a central focus of my surgical work since the beginning of my career. With the introduction of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), surgical treatment moved into the background for many years. Acid suppression proved effective, and typical symptoms could often be significantly alleviated.

However, after discontinuation of medication, symptoms frequently recur, often requiring long-term therapy.

The underlying cause of reflux disease is mechanical and cannot be corrected by medication. Following surgical treatment, long-term medication is generally no longer necessary.

What motivates me most is seeing patients regain the ability to eat and drink without symptoms, lie flat comfortably, discontinue acid-suppressing medication, and experience a meaningful restoration of quality of life.

At the same time, not every case of reflux disease requires surgery. A careful, individualized, and differentiated assessment is essential.

For me, medicine means applying available options with experience, judgment, and responsibility. Every treatment—conservative, medical, or surgical—has its place when used appropriately.

My goal is to work with my patients to develop a solution that is medically sound, functionally effective, and allows long-term freedom from symptoms—nothing more, nothing less.
